Joan’s house – August 11, 2011

We were a smallish group at Joan’s house, but we enjoyed the deck, the beautiful sunny weather and the yummy margaritas, cherries and Boston Cream filled cupcakes.  Joan insisted that the cupcakes were easy peasy, but they certainly tasted like she spent a lot of time on them.

Cupcakes and fresh Flathead cherries!

Each time we come to Joan’s house, she and Jeff have done something new to spruce it up.  This time she had a new light fixture in the dining area that we really liked.  Before the meeting, she and Jeff had trimmed the overhead branches that were hanging above the deck – thanks!  It’s a big tree with big branches.  I would have hated to get conked on the head before I finished my cupcake and margaritas!

On the deck, we all shared our knitting projects and shared what had been going on in our week since we last met.  I could hear the conversations swirling around me and was astonished by the variety of subjects that I caught snatches of while I was knitting:

“Oh, they called at 7:30 with a cancellation, so I went in for a root canal this morning.”

“Well, have another margarita, they’re medicinal!”

“My husband is on a 1000 mile bike trip…”

“My hips hurt after my grandbaby left.  I don’t have that cute indentation that I used to have for carrying babies.”

“…and she signed a six-month lease with no job in sight!”

“…my son’s girlfriend is joining us at the lake this weekend, but I’m trying not to get too excited although I really like her.”

“…hiking battle scars.  Mt. Aeneas reared up and bit me here.”

We are truly a diverse group with plenty of interests and issues.  It’s so much fun to catch up with each others’  lives.  We were all concerned with Mary’s hip replacement, but she is doing very well and is already home.  We are descending on her next week with food and treats and wine.

Michele is starting a new project for herself.  It is a great cropped sweater with wide, draping lapels.  A perfect Michele pattern.

Michele's new pattern and yarn.

The pattern called for a Peruvian yarn, but Michele found some worsted weight yarn on Knitpicks that is soft and perfect.  The maroon yarn is for a thin trim on the sleeves.

Francy has finished one Christmas stocking for her daughter-in-law.  She was afraid that it turned out too small, but felt confident that a lot of gifts and goodies could be stuffed into it.

Hohoho! One down...

Deb is working on Glen’s top-down Henley.  She had a problem with casting on extra stitches, but got some help and was surprised to find out that it was so easy.

Wake up, Francy. Christmas is coming!

Michele and Marylane were working on their no-brainer projects, as we all do when there is a lot of talking and activity around us.  It’s so easy to make a mistake, and so hard to correct it at home later.

Easier to talk and knit when the pattern is simple.

Linda and Joan were doing the same with simple patterns.  Life is good sitting in the sunshine with friends and a margarita.

I see that there are fewer cupcakes on the plate...

Speaking of friends and margaritas, those of us who had to start work this week or next (school starting ALREADY!?!) decided that they felt cheated missing out on the fun we have on Tequila Tuesday, so we made a plan.  Bring your bikes to Marsha’s house at 3:45 or 4:00 and we’ll bike down the bypass bike path to Somers, eat at Tiebucker’s (and drink a margarita or whatever) and then try to bike back up the bike path.  It’s a longish ride (about 10 miles) but very flat and doable and fun.  If you don’t want to bike with us, then just meet us at Tiebucker’s in Somers for dinner and drinkies.  I think it will be fun.  The bike path is great and the weather is supposed to be good too.

Also, next Thursday, we will meet at Rosauer’s at 4:00 and carpool to Mary’s house for knitting and for a visit to our invalid friend on the lake.  We are taking treats and food and want to cheer up Mary after her hip surgery.  I saw her on Friday and she is doing great and was planning to blow that joint (the hospital, not the literal joint – it’s pretty much blown already!) later on Friday afternoon.  So it’s another Castoffs ROAD TRIP.

Until I see you again, whether it’s on the bike path, at Tiebucker’s or at Mary’s house, keep those needles blazing and enjoy the last days of summer.
