We met at Marylane’s house on a snowy afternoon. It’s really starting to feel like winter. Brrr. We were a noisy bunch today, full of…something. We joked and laughed and generally threw off all seriousness. Perhaps the wine had something to do with it. Maybe. Marylane baked delicious chocolate chip cookies. I had two. Could’ve had six, but I showed some restraint.

Besides the cookies, Marylane has been a busy bee knitting hats. She showed us a couple that she knitted for Christmas. One has a great pattern and earflaps. The other is a closer-fitting style. Both are great.

She’s still working on her sweater, but since that’s for her, she decided to take a time-out to make some gifts. Marylane modeled the earflap hat after she put braided ties on sides and top.

Marylane wasn’t happy with the grumpy look (totally inadvertant, I promise she was very happy!) that I caught, so she took a little revenge and made a photo of me with an absolutely demonic expression on my face. “I want to see that picture on the blog!!” she said. Here it is, Marylane.

I was holding up the vest that I started this week. It’s made from Paton’s Classic wool. The pattern has an interesting knit-ridge running up the front and back. I did get a better photo of it.

Speaking of sweaters, Michele modeled her fluffy blue sweater although the sleeves weren’t attached. Very pretty.
The Fringe effect
Michele didn’t come to knit, she came to work on a card for her husband’s birthday next week. He works at Fish, Wildlife and Parks, so the card is in the shape of a big fish. She cut out letters, ranson-note style, to send the message.

It’s unsigned, but we wanted her to add a phony name like ‘Pookie-Wookie.’ This made Linda become hysterical with laughter – and started a discussion about other terms of endearment that made no sense. I mean the terms of endearment, not the discussion…although, after a few glasses of wine, the discussion made less and less sense.
Another term of endearment (to some, perhaps) is Doodle Dandy, as in Yankee Doodle Dandy. We wondered out loud what a doodle dandy might be. Linda suggested that it was a metrosexual. Hmmm. Makes as much sense as whatever Irving Berlin had in mind. Whatever the definition, it was a source of great merriment to us.

Roxanne came with Francy and is planning to make her scarf 9 feet long. She demonstrated how she wanted to wear it – not in this photo, unfortunately – but it’s a beautiful yarn , Nashua wool. Warm.

Hey! Where are the pancakes?
It’s good to know how multifaceted the Castoffs are. Just at this meeting, we found out that we know 1)how to keep sourdough starter 2)the words to ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ 3)what ‘hodge-podge’ means in craft circles 4)and how to use ‘metrosexual’ in a sentence. Wow. We are awesome.
Mary was at a committee meeting, but she sent me a photo of the hat she just finished for her son-in-law knit from alpaca yarn. She is afraid that her daughter will open the package when it gets to Italy and keep it for herself! Nah, Larissa wouldn’t do that. It is a fabulous hat, though.

Julie and I sat next to each other and I didn’t get a photo of ROBERT, the bear that she’s knitting out of an unfinished sweater that her mother began for Julie’s father years ago. The pattern’s name is Robert and that was also her father’s name. The pattern instructions are terrible – Leslie and Francy agreed on that. Julie has been knitting and ripping out the snout of little Robert all week. Hopefully, next time we meet, Robert will have a face.
Until two weeks from now, have a very happy Thanksgiving, all. Eat a lot of turkey and dressing, enjoy a glass of wine (or two) and tell your family how much you love them. We’ll meet at Deb’s house a week after Thanksgiving unless I hear differently. Gobble, gobble!
