Knitting in Woodland Park – August 29, 2013

When I first got to the park, the weather was brilliantly sunny and hot – typical summer weather – but gradually, as all the Castoffs gathered, the sky grew darker and the wind blew stronger. Looked like a big storm was brewing.

Did we care? Not at first. Not until we realized that some of us were sitting in aluminum chairs under big trees. Until then, however, we were happy as can be.

Francy was still working on a sweater for Heidi and John’s baby – very cute. That due date isn’t far off, is it Francy?

Baby sweater!

When Carol got there, the wind was just beginning to ‘freshen.’ “Do you think it’s going to rain?” I asked. Carol looked so surprised – I guess she hadn’t noticed the coming storm.

“Rain? What rain?”

Gradually, we all roosted around in a circle, laughing, talking, comparing knitting projects. Leslie and Michele are knitting skirts in bulky, feltable yarn – Leslie’s is for her granddaughter, Grace. I forgot who Michele is knitting for – sorry, sorry! I’ll find out next week and report. By this time the tops of the trees were whipping around and I was beginning to think about packing it in.

Leslie’s is orange and Michele’s is blue. Whatever they are…

Marylane and Joan dragged their chairs over, glancing at the sky the whole way. Joan is receiving all kinds of suggestions about what to do with her scarf when it’s finished – and it is, all but weaving in the loose ends. Not sure that Marylane took out her knitting…

Uncertainty about staying longer was in the air by now. Is Michele pointing to a lightning bolt?

By the time Julie got there, she was wearing a sweater – the temperature had dropped some – but she gamely took out her ongoing project and gave me a grin.

Hey, it’s getting dark!

Linda was knitting some, too, on her drop-stitch scarf. I think this is her go-to project for when she doesn’t want to knit anything too confusing. Got it, Linda.

Happy in spite of the threatening weather.

Mary and Deb were there, but left when the storm struck. Mary had to go home and pack for a trip to Billings and then Denver. Bon Voyage, Mary!

Finally, the rain was seen coming toward us across the lake. Michele offered her house as a refuge for those who wanted to continue knitting, so several of us took her up on the offer and drove over. It was cozy knitting and watching the storm from inside her living room.

It’s starting to be that time of the year when thunderstorms could interrupt our outdoor knitting. We’ll play it by ear, Castoffs, until the fall drives us indoors for the winter. Until then, keep those needles blazing and I’ll see you at the park.
