Knitting at Linda’s house – August 25, 2011

We met at Linda’s house on a hot afternoon.  Michele, Deb and Leslie had been slaving all day in the classroom (or in an office in the school – same dif) and were glad to come to Linda’s to tell us about the beginning of school.  The retirees (Marsha, Mary and Linda) sympathized but were very glad to be out of the workplace.  Julie is a youngster, so doesn’t have a choice.  Right, Jules?  Linda served us wonderful fruity glasses of sangria which was as beautiful to look at as it was delicious to drink.

Quite a lot of drinkers, eh?

Beautiful fruit waiting for the sangria.

Linda also served us pita chips and tortilla chips with two dips.  One of them was a roasted red pepper dip made from a salsa from Harry & David and mixed with sour cream.  Yummy.

I must have been hungry - lots of eating and not much knitting.

Leslie and Deb were glad to be out of school for the day and were anxious to tell us about it.  Leslie is already calculating her retirement date.  And after only one week of the new year!  Only four more years, Leslie!  You can hang on that long.

"And I figure four years - I don't count this one, 'cuz it's already in the bag."

Leslie is working on her second shawl from the same pattern as her first oblique design.  She recently wore her other one at a retreat and was so happy with the weight and feel of it.  It looks like an easy pattern in spite of the unusual look of the striping.  Beautiful.

Leslie's work-in-progress.

Deb is still working on her husband’s top-down Henley.  It’s coming along very nicely.  She’s using Paton’s classic wool in a heather tone.  Love this pattern.

Deb's sweater-in-progress.

Mary waited and waited for Julie to get there to help her with her sock.  Finally, Julie came in and immediately…screwed up.  Well, she did.  She told Mary what to do in the pattern and then got bogged down in terminology and they both lost it.  I do think they found it, so it was only a temporary screw-up.  Whew.

Looks like Julie only needs one sock for herself. Oh, there is a leg under there! Euuuw, bad picture!

Michele was hot and tired of her overcrowded classroom.  She started calculating her own retirement date!  Hey, same number of years as Leslie!  Michele also sent me the recipe for some dip that she served several weeks ago at her house…finally.  I’ll add it into this post even though it should go into a past one.

Shoepeg Corn Cheese Dip
1 can shoepeg corn
8 oz. sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 cup finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 can green chilies
1/3 cup finely chopped onion
1 or 2 finely chopped jalapeno peppers
Mix everything together and chill.
This was an easy, yet very tasty dip.  I’m going to try it as soon as I get back from my trip to Scotland.  Leslie has agreed to stand in as photographer and chronicler of Castoffs meetings while I’m gone.  I’ll have a lot of posts to catch up with unless I take time to do them from my Iconia tablet in Scotland…Nah, probably not.
Next week, we meet at Deb’s house – minus Marylane and me who’ll be trying to figure out the age-old question: What DO Scottish men wear underneath their kilts?
Until then, keep those needles blazing and enjoy the last gasp of summer.
